LICA

Lund International Choral Academy 2012

General information

Lund International Choral Academy (LICA) is a master class aimed at students at a Masters level in orchestral and choral conducting, and at professional choral and orchestral conductors wishing to improve their conducting skills. The master class is given every two years as an independent 8 credits course, and takes place at Odeum, Lund University. Instruction will include conducting gesture, interpretation, and practice with professional ensembles, and is concluded with a public concert.The academy is given in cooperation between Odeum, Southern Choral Centre and Malmö Academy of Music (all representing Lund University), and Musik i Syd.

In October 2012 the third edition of LICA will take place, in connection with Lund Choral Festival. Students will be given the opportunity to conduct the professional ensembles DR Vokalensemblet (Vocal Ensemble of the Danish Radio, Copenhagen) and the string orchestra Musica Vitae (Växjö, Sweden). The teachers will be Professor Gustaf Sjökvist, former Organist at the Royal Court of Sweden, and Patrik Andersson, Director of Music at Lund University.

Academic qualifications of participants

Course acceptance requires studies at a higher music academic level, a music exam at a bachelor level in conducting, or work as a professional conductor.

DR Vokalensemblet

With 18 professional singers, DR Vokalensemblet is one of the leading choirs in Denmark. The choir is on the staff of the Danish Radio in Copenhagen.

Musica Vitae

Based in Växjö, Sweden, Musica Vitae is the chamber orchestra of Musik i Syd, with a repertoire of baroque, classical era, romantic and contemporary music. During its almost 30 years of existence the orchestra has premiered more than 150 works written directly for the orchestra. The orchestra performs throughout the south of Sweden and in the major Swedish concert halls.

Masterclass instructors

Gustaf Sjökvist

Professor Gustaf Sjökvist is one of Sweden’s most experienced choral conductors, with an international sphere of activity. Professor Sjökvist was Organist at Stockholm Cathedral 1981-2011, and conductor of the Swedish Radio Choir 1986-1994. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.


Patrik Andersson

Patrik Andersson is Director of Music at Lund University and head of Odeum, the Lund University center for music. He is also head of conductor teaching at Malmö Academy of Music.

Application

All students applying for Lund International Choral Academy have to register on the Swedish national registration website www.antagning.se no later than April 15 2012. This is very important, as students who do not register on this site will not be accepted to Lund International Choral Academy.

Supporting documents for international students

Send the following supporting documents to University Admissions in Sweden at the address: FE 1, SE-833 83 Stroemsund, Sweden. Documents must arrive before the deadline:
• Cover sheet (printed from your online application)
• All certified official certificates, diplomas and transcripts that are required to prove you meet the admission requirements
• A certified copy (certified by two persons) of the page in your passport with your personal data and photograph, or some other official identification document
Remember to check if there are any country specific rules for your academic documents and review all other official instructions from University Admissions in Sweden.



Students also have to send the following application materials to Odeum, Lund University:

  • DVD recording of a rehearsal or concert (conductor from the front) with chorus or orchestra or a combined ensemble (duration max 10 min, and max two years old)
  • Curriculum vitae including a list of compleate courses and practical experiences as well as compositions performed (over the last 2 years)
  • Application form (can be downloaded from the bottom of this page)

Course content

The content of Lund International Choral Academy includes conducting technique, rehearsal methods, score analysis, practise and concert with professional choir and orchestra, discussions on interpretation.

Number of participants

Lund International Choral Academy will accept 5-6 active students.

Observing participants

It is possible to take part as an observing (passive) participant in Lund International Choral Academy.

Examination

The instructors of the master class are the examiners of Lund International Choral Academy. Examination is on a continuous basis. All participants will receive at certificate for taking part in the masterclass. The grades Failed or Passed will be given. Participants who pass the Lund International Choral Academy may be able to include the course in their academic degree. Level: Undergraduate. The course is valid for 8 ECTS credits.

Scholarship

Lund International Choral Accademy offers a scholarship of 30.000 SEK for non-European students. If you are applying for this scholarship please tick the appropriate box on the application form. Lund International Choral Academy will contact you further on concerning your application.

The masterclass will take place at Odeum, Lund University, in the town of Lund in southern Sweden.

Participants in Lund International Choral Academy are responsible for bringing their own scores required for the course.
