Palaestra et Odeum

Palaestra et Odeum, designed by architect Helgo Zettervall, was built in 1883. It is classified as a listed building and owned by the National Property Board of Sweden. The building originally housed a gymnastics hall (palaestra) and concert hall (odeum). After a fire in the 1980s, the gymnastics hall was replaced by an auditorium, but Odeum remains a centre for music.

Kapellsalen (the Chapel Hall) at Palaestra et Odeum was named after Akademiska kapellet (the Lund University Academic Orchestra), which has rehearsed there since 1883. Kapell (chapel) is an ancient word for orchestra, so the name is not connected to religious activities.
All of Odeum’s ensembles rehearse at Kapellsalen every week. Kapellsalen is also a venue for lectures and chamber concerts.

The Odeum centre also has facilities for Odeum’s staff and a music library.
